Engaging with youth towards a sustainable future  Print This Page

Introduction

The North Coast Eco-friendly Youth Project is about helping and supporting youth service providers in the region to become more sustainable through implementing environmental practices in their programs and activities, and where possible in their centres. It is also about engaging youth to become more environmentally aware and empowering them to make positive decisions about their impact on the environment.

The North Coast Eco-friendly Youth Project is promoting the adoption of environmental practices, such as recycling, reuse, water and energy conservation both within Youth Centres and in programs provided to youth in the region. The project is working closely with youth service providers and young people to give them the support and training they need to move towards better environmental practices.

The initial 2 year project began in May 2005.  The Project Co-ordinator, together with the Project Partners, has designed an effective education program which is appropriate to the needs of Byron youth and to the centre itself.

On Thursday 4th December, the Eco-friendly Youth Project was presented with the 2006/2007 Local Government and Shires Association Excellence in the Environment Award for Environmental Education.

The award recognises the success of the project in increasing the capacity of youth service providers across the region to improve their action for sustainability and reduce their environmental footprint. The award was presented to Linda Tohver and Bernadette Thomas at a special ceremony at NSW Parliament House in December. Well done NEWF!
