What is Second Hand Saturday?
Second Hand Saturday is a bi-annual north coast event involving the co-ordination of neighbourhood garage sales across the region, for the sale of second hand goods between residents in selected streets. Second Hand Saturday has helped to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, enables residents to participate in the promotion of reuse and repair, and engage them in an environmentally, socially and economically rewarding activity.
Second Hand Saturday was last held in November 2007 and had more than 400 households registering to hold garage sales in Ballina Shire, Byron Shire, Richmond Valley and Clarence Valley Council areas. Hundreds of people visited these garage sales and participated in reuse and recycling of many different items. Advertising sponsorship was secured from The Northern Star and Daily Examiner, who co-ordinated editorial and advertising in the local and regional community papers.
