“The Green House: Living With Less Waste”
A Mobile Waste Education Program

What is “The Green House”?

“The Green House” is a mobile waste avoidance education program which promotes sustainable waste practices to the community through the provision of an information marquee, education resources, demonstrations and performance based education. The aim of “The Green House” is to encourage people to learn about how they can actively help their local environment through adopting simple waste-less practices, such as smart-shopping, reuse, composting and recycling.

The Green House at the Big Scrub DayThe Green House travels to community events, schools and markets across the North Coast providing an innovative, interactive and fun learning experience for all ages. The Green House has already presented at 151 school, community and special events including Evans Head, Yamba & Byron Bay community markets, Alstonville & Grafton Agricultural Show, Bangalow Billy Cart Derby, Casino Beef Week, PRIMEX, three high school SUSS Forums and numerous landfill education days in both the Clarence Valley and Richmond Valley council areas.  An estimated 12,000 school students and other members of the community have visited the unit at these events.

What does “The Green House” do?

The Green House uses a variety of fun educational tools to promote the waste avoidance message including:

Students from Lismore at World Environment Day pledging for the environment.

  • Performances from ‘Waste Experts’ whose home is “The Green House”. The Waste Experts have been providing adults and kids an innovative insight into how to live with less waste;

  • Games, quizzes, and activities for kids;

  • The opportunity to make a pledge to the environment (and to take a photo of yourself making that commitment)

  • Information about your local Council garbage, recycling and organics services

  • Demonstrations including smart-shopping, chemical-free cleaning, composting and low-waste gardening

  • Lesson Plans for primary and secondary school teachers.

What can you learn about?

Each person visiting The Green House will have a chance to learn about the following key issues:

  • The impact of our increasing use and waste of resources: The Green House highlights why our continued consumption of goods (raw materials and natural resources) is not sustainable.

  • How to live with less waste at home, school, work and play: As a community we must decide if we want to continue to consume our natural resources and send goods to landfill at an ever increasing rate, or if we are prepared to take action and change our waste creating behaviours. The Green House shows how you can do simple everyday things to create less waste, and contribute to a healthier sustainable environment through:

    • Avoiding making waste by being careful consumers

    • Considering the environmental and waste disposal impact of each item we purchase

    • How to reuse waste materials

    • How to be a smart shopper

    • Closing the loop by buying recycled

    • Composting and worm farming

    • Litter Reduction
